The Scottish Conservatives want all young people to be given the opportunity to experience a full week of residential outdoor education at least once between the ages of 11 and 15. Is taking part in activities like climbing and sailing a good idea, or a distraction from learning to read and write?

A teenager has been made the subject of one of the country's first lifelong restriction orders. 18-year-old Darren Cornelius, a prisoner in Edinburgh, admitted leaving a stranger scarred for life after carrying out a random knife attack upon him. Already charged with 65 offences, his latest sentence means he'll remain behind bars until a panel of experts say he is safe for release.
