1.00pm Radio 3 Lunchtime Concert
Beethoven Plus
A run of concerts recorded at LSO St Luke's, featuring a complete series of Beethoven's string quartets coupled with masterpieces of the genre by Haydn and Bartok.
8/8. Haydn's Frog Quartet earned its nickname from the rocking motif in the final movement, and it was the last movement of Beethoven's last completed quartet that caused such controversy at the premiere. After a reviewer described it as 'incomprehensible', Beethoven replaced the last movement (later published separately as the Grosse Fuge) with an altogether lighter and cheerier Allegro movement which, arguably, sits uncomfortably after the emotional weight of the Cavatina.
