With Tom Service. The 成人快手 Symphony Orchestra continues its season at London's Barbican Hall with a concert of music from England and Poland.
Benjamin Britten and his teacher Frank Bridge both wrote pieces influenced by the sea - Bridge composed his suite of orchestra seascapes in 1910, three years before the birth of his star pupil. Britten's own Violin Concerto was completed in 1939, shortly after Germany's invasion of Poland and the work exudes a sense of the gathering storm.
Lutoslawski was taken prisoner by the Nazis, but miraculously escaped to become Poland's leading postwar composer and his 1954 Concerto for Orchestra was the work which first brought him to Western ears.
