Understanding Brain Fog
Brain fog is a colloquial umbrella term for what is technically called Cognitive Impairment.
It includes problems like difficulty concentrating or with your memory, as well as confusion and a general 'fuzzy' feeling.
Causes can include:
- The menopause and peri-menopause
- Infections
- Covid and Long-Covid
- Autoimmune conditions like Lupus disease and Celiac disease
- Sub-par gut health
Managing brain fog symptoms:
- Ensure you have enough vitamin B in your diet (whole grains; beans and legumes, dairy, eggs, meat, fish, and fortified cereals)
- Avoid excessive alcohol consumption
- Prioritise fibre in your diet for better gut-health (wholegrain rice/bread/pasta, apples, pears, beans, seeds – and fermented foods such as kimchi, sauerkraut, live yoghurt and kefir)
- Increase your intake of polyphenol rich foods (blueberries, green tea, and beans)
- Ensure you are taking vitamin D, especially in the autumn and winter months of the year
- Focus on a good night’s rest
- Make lists to manage stress
- Include regular physical activity
