What’s the real cost of fast fashion — and do we even care?
20 June 2019
A recent report by MPs stated that we send a staggering 300,000 tonnes of textiles to incineration or landfill every year.
The widespread availability of cheap clothing allows many of us to update our wardrobes regularly without breaking the bank, but is it also responsible for us discarding previous purchases without a second thought?
On Sanjeev Kohli’s Big Talk, Eunice Olumide asked members of the public in Edinburgh what they thought about the problem.
“For a lot of people it’s ignorance; they don’t really want to know,” said one. “They see a nice pair of jeans and they want to wear them, no matter what.”
One young woman admitted the landfill statistic made her feel guilty, while another interviewee had a novel solution that may not appeal to everyone.
“Maybe we should start walking about naked,” he said.
