20 April 2018

Scottish actor and writer Sanjeev Kohli, a non-practising Sikh, is probably best-known for playing Muslim shopkeeper Navid in .

Raised in a Scottish-Asian family in Glasgow, it was at 14 when Sanjeev realised his opinions differed greatly from those of his parents and his two brothers. Questioning his faith, he decided not to grow his hair or wear a turban like the other men in his family.

Now father of teenagers, Sanjeev was interested to revisit his teenage decision to turn his back on the Sikh faith he was brought up in. Did he inadvertently throw away facets of his own culture?

In his programme My Turban and Me, Sanjeev wanted to find out more about the young Sikh people who are keen to advertise their faith.

An insight into modern-day Sikhism

A significant religion with an estimated 12,000 practising followers in Scotland, Sikh organisations still focus on dealing with confusion regarding the turban and other aspects of Sikhism generally caused by a lack of understanding among the public.

Vinny Singh, a contributor to , made a fun video answering questions and debunking a few myths surrounding his faith.

Feminism in Sikhism

In the programme are Amrit and Manisha, two young Sikh women who have chosen to wear a turban as an expression of both their feminist and religious beliefs.

Amrit spoke about how she, , has decided to allow all the hair on her body to grow in accordance with her faith.

"The idea of letting your body just be is a very freeing experience."

Positive Role Models

My Turban and Me features a number of contributors who want to provide a positive role model for young Sikhs.

A visit to a photography studio in London highlighted a striking photograph of tattooed, musclebound kickboxer Kanwar Singh. Kanwar proudly wears his turban during bouts in a similar manner to another Sikh role model, Canadian MMA fighter Arjan Bhullar.
