Why Mary, mother of Jesus, is a central figure to followers of both Christianity and Islam

29 March 2018

For many, Mary is a symbol of purity and strength; a sinless young woman selected by God and entrusted with the duty of giving birth to Jesus.

Followers of Christianity and Islam have different views on the role Jesus played. Christians believe he was the son of God, while Muslims believe he was his messenger

However, both religions agree on Mary’s significance.

In Painting the Holy Land, a special two-part series for Holy Week, artist Lachlan Goudie met people from both faiths who revealed to him why Mary plays an important part in their lives.

Mary in Christianity

Lachlan visited students at the Bethlehem Icon School where artist Madelene revealed her relationship with Mary.

“I feel she’s like my mother. She’s like a teacher ... to be a good mother. I feel that she’s near me when I pray to her. [She’s] the most important woman in the world.”

Mary in Islam

In a Bethlehem mosque Lachlan learned that Mary’s role is so significant to Islam she is the only woman mentioned by name in the Quran, which has an entire chapter devoted to her.

Abdel Majid A. Al. Amarneh explained, “We love Mary and we teach her story to our daughters and to our boys”.

“We ask God to bless her. God made her an example of purity, an example for the wives of Mohammed and an example to all women.”
