Reducing the speed limit from 30mph to 20mph — would you consider the idea a feminist issue?
Anna Semlyen, Campaign Manager for 20’s Plenty for Us, believes that it is and debated the issue on Mornings with Stephen Jardine with Euan Blockley, a Conservative councillor from Glasgow who’s against blanket speed reductions.
20mph feminism
Anna Semlyen says the campaign for more 20 mile an hour zones is a feminist issue.
‘It’s men who tend to drive aggressively and are also more likely to be dangerous drivers’
Ms Semlyen’s argued that women in particular would benefit from lowering the speed limit to 20mph.
“Women gain more confidence; they can exercise more; they gain time; they gain freedom.
“It’s men who tend to drive aggressively and are also more likely to be dangerous drivers.”
Presenter Stephen Jardine countered that these appeared to be generalisations; Ms Semlyen revealed that her assertions were based on surveys on .
‘It’s trivialising feminism and road traffic accidents’
Euan Blockley stated his opposition to blanket speed reductions, instead preferring that the power to change speed limits should lie with local councillors and the community.
Mr Blockley also suggested that listeners to the radio show would be shouting at their radios, wondering “what on earth feminism has to do with road traffic”.
“It’s trivialising feminism and it’s trivialising the issue of road traffic [accidents].”
