鈥楢fter the break-up of my first marriage, running saved my life鈥

9 January 2019

After the breakdown of her first marriage, journalist and author Bella Mackie began experiencing panic attacks and episodes of anxiety.

“I thought if I don’t do something now, then I’ll never do anything — I’ll become a shell of a person.”

So Bella made a dramatic change in her life by doing something that she’d never done before: running.

Going for a run saved my life

鈥淚 was spurred into action鈥

Bella found gyms intimidating. “Running was something I could do on my own. I could do it in the dark and no one would see me.”

Her first attempts at running didn’t exactly go to plan. She felt self-conscious, was adamant that she was embarrassing herself, and was convinced that people would laugh at her.

“I had no confidence, so I felt I had to do it in secret.”

Using the Couch to 5k app allowed Bella to set realistic goals and track her progress. She now believes in her ability and runs for up to 12k most days.

Bella believes her fitness kick has really benefited her mental health — and she even has a new husband: Radio 1 DJ Greg James.
