Pupils have their say in ³ÉÈË¿ìÊÖ News School Report Survey

³ÉÈË¿ìÊÖ News School Report today unveils the findings of a survey giving pupils attending School Report partner schools the opportunity to give their view on life, home, technology, faith and other topical issues.

Twenty-four thousand children from more than 300 schools across the UK taking part in ³ÉÈË¿ìÊÖ News School Report completed the online survey between 20 January and 4 March 2011. The sample includes 11 to 16 year old children; the ages 12, 13 and 14 years are best represented and slightly more girls than boys completed the online survey.

The survey, carried out in partnership with the Royal Statistical Society Centre for Statistical Education (RSSCSE), aims to provide a snapshot of what it's like to be an 11-16 year old in 2011.

It includes questions directly related to the adult census and to their experiences and beliefs and explores the key elements in their lives including family, education, hopes and fears, and the future.

Concerns about the danger of crime and over the threat of terrorism arise from the survey, however findings suggest children's outlook for the future is positive; 48% plan to vote when they are 18 and 57% think they will go to university. When asked what they want to achieve by the time they are 30, 35% chose owning their own home and only 7% chose "being famous".

Technology plays an important part in their lives with 67% having a mobile phone with internet access and 60% saying they have helped adults in their family find websites.

The survey will feature as part of ³ÉÈË¿ìÊÖ School Report News Day on 24 March 2011. ³ÉÈË¿ìÊÖ School Report is a project to engage 11-14 year olds with news and bring their stories and voices to a wider audience. As the project enters its fifth year, teachers across the country have spent the past few months using resources available on the ³ÉÈË¿ìÊÖ News School Report website to enable their students to become "School Reporters" and develop journalistic skills.

Helen Shreeve, Editor of ³ÉÈË¿ìÊÖ News School Report, said: "More than 30,000 School Reporters will be joining the ³ÉÈË¿ìÊÖ's newsgathering teams on Thursday 24 March to report the news from their perspective. The School Report Survey gives them a further opportunity to tell UK audiences what life is like for them."
