Inaugural Nick Clarke Award shortlist announced


The ³ÉÈË¿ìÊÖ today announces the shortlist for the inaugural Nick Clarke Award, created in honour of the hugely popular former presenter of ³ÉÈË¿ìÊÖ Radio 4's The World At One who died in November 2006, to celebrate and recognise the best broadcast interview of the year.

The shortlist is as follows:

Phil Cox, More4News, Channel 4 – Interview with a former Sudanese army commander who spoke of the part he played in the war crimes in Darfur;

Ìý

Fergal Keane, Taking A Stand, ³ÉÈË¿ìÊÖ Radio 4 – Interview with Jack Kevockian, who has "assisted" more than 100 people take their own lives;

Ìý

Carrie Gracie, The Interview, ³ÉÈË¿ìÊÖ World Service – Interview with Alan Johnson about his experience as a hostage in Gaza;

Ìý

Lyse Doucet, The Interview, ³ÉÈË¿ìÊÖ World Service – Interview with David Bellavia, an American soldier, about the war in Iraq;

Ìý

Tim Donovan, ³ÉÈË¿ìÊÖ London News – Interview with Ray Lewis when he resigned as Deputy Mayor of London;

Ìý

Jimmy Smallwood, Morning:MK, ³ÉÈË¿ìÊÖ Three Counties Radio – Interview with Barry James Taylor of the England First Party during the spring local elections and a particularly hard-fought ward in Milton Keynes;

Ìý

Allison Ferns, ³ÉÈË¿ìÊÖ Southern Counties Radio – Interview with Tara Edgar and family about living with a child with Cerebral Palsy;

Ìý

Eddie Mair, PM, ³ÉÈË¿ìÊÖ Radio 4 – Interview with Hilda Gibson, former Land Girl, after the Government announced that they would be recognising the wartime contribution of the Women's Land Army.

Stephen Mitchell, Deputy Director and Head of Programmes, ³ÉÈË¿ìÊÖ News, says: "Nick Clarke was one of the ³ÉÈË¿ìÊÖ's finest broadcasters and we are thrilled to have such a strong shortlist for the inaugural award in his honour.

"The shortlist was drawn from many, brilliant entries and I believe all of them reflect the interviewing style Nick was so famous for – they are memorable, leave a strong impression on the audience and provide a deeper understanding of their subject matter."

Ìý

The winner of the Nick Clarke Award will be announced at The Times Cheltenham Literature Festival in October and will receive a dozen bottles of good claret – which Nick himself would have enjoyed.

The Nick Clarke Award was launched by Radio 4 Controller Mark Damazer at The Nick Clarke Debate at the Cheltenham Literature Festival in October 2007.

Ìý

Panellists and judges of the Nick Clarke Award come from the ³ÉÈË¿ìÊÖ and other media and broadcast organisations.

Ìý

Interviews eligible to enter must have been conducted between 31 July 2007 and 31 July 2008.
