Winning Superlambanana design

成人快手 North West Tonight helps local schools Go Superlambananas!

Wade Deacon High School in Widnes will appear on 成人快手 North West Tonight on Monday (16 June) after winning a competition to design their very own Superlambanana.

Earlier this year, North West Tonight and the Arts Council of England North West gave schools across the region a chance to make their mark during Liverpool's Capital of Culture year by designing and painting a Superlambanana.

Hundreds of schools rose to the challenge, with brilliant designs inspired by the culture of the region. The design by Wade Deacon High School in Widnes reflects the attitudes of youth in today's society.

"Our design was inspired by the way children label each other as Goths, Chavs or other," the pupils wrote. "We want to mix the different cultures together to show how society in the North West has grown over the years."

And, just as the original Superlambanana is half lamb and half banana, the pupils' statue will be half decorated in "Chav" style, the other half as a "Goth".

North West Tonight's Ranvir Singh, one of the three judges on the panel, said: "We chose Wade Deacon High School because it was so different to all the other entries and it really represented what culture meant to the students who designed it.

"It's a young, vibrant and edgy design. It was incredibly difficult to decide and we took ages to come up with the eventual winner. The judges all felt drawn to it and we wanted to reward the pupils who had decided to go for something out of the ordinary."

The school's winning design will feature as one of 100 beautifully decorated replica statues filling the streets, parks and public spaces of the city as part of the Go Superlambananas event, which starts on 16 June 2008.

Notes to Editors

  • The Superlambanana – half lamb and half banana – is a large, yellow, two-metre statue that has become synonymous with Liverpool.
  • The competition judges were North West Tonight’s Ranvir Singh, Merseyside artists Amrit and Rabindra Singh and Sally-Ann Wilkinson from Wild In Art.
