The winners of the seventh annual ³ÉÈË¿ìÊÖ Radio 3 Awards for World Music were announced last night (Thursday 10 April) at a ceremony at London Dingwalls, hosted by Radio 3's Mary Ann Kennedy.

At Dingwalls to accept their Planet awards were Sa Dingding, Son de la Frontera, Juldeh Camara, Justin Adams, Mayra Andrade and Francis Falceto.

Bassekou Kouyate made a surprise appearance to collect his two awards and Rachid Taha was presented his award by Joe Strummer's widow, Lucinda. There was also a special tribute to Andy Palacio who sadly passed away earlier this year.

The evening included live performances from Kaushiki Chakrabarty, who won an Award for World Music in 2005, and Mayra Andrade, Justin Adams and Juldeh Camara, and Rachid Taha who closed proceedings with an hour-long set.

The awards do not end there – voting for the Radio 3 Awards for World Music Audience Award opens on Friday 11 April, closing on Thursday 8 May 2008. Decided by members of the general public, the winner of the Audience Award is chosen from the 27 nominees across all categories. Votes can be made online at bbc.co.uk/radio3/worldmusic/a4wm2008.

The winner of the Audience Award will be announced on RadioÌý3 in a World Routes special on Saturday 5 July recorded on location in the winner's home country where they will be presented with the award.

The winner of the Audience Award will be invited to join fellow 2008 Planet winners Sa Dingding, Bassekou Kouyate and Ngoni Ba, Son de la Frontera, Mayra Andrade, and Justin Adams and Juldeh Camara performing at the ³ÉÈË¿ìÊÖ Proms on Wednesday 30 July for A World Music Celebration: The Winners Of The ³ÉÈË¿ìÊÖ Radio 3 Awards For World Music, at the Royal Albert Hall.

There are 11 awards in total – including the geographical categories, Africa, Americas, Middle East and North Africa, Asia Pacific and Europe – alongside awards for Culture Crossing, Newcomer and Club Global, Album of the Year, World Shaker Award and the Audience Award.

Nominees for all categories except for Album of the Year, the Audience Award and World Shaker Award are voted for by the 3,000 delegates to WOMEX, the annual World Music Expo.

An additional nomination in each of the geographical categories is chosen by music specialists at the ³ÉÈË¿ìÊÖ World Service.

The Album of the Year is voted on by a panel of critics assembled by fRoots magazine.

World Shaker Award celebrates the work of an individual outside the limelight whose work has furthered the cause of world music. The award is decided by the Awards for World Music jury.
