Radio Devon celebrates 25听years with 25 walks
|
This year 成人快手 Radio Devon reaches the grand old age of 25. To help mark the occasion the station is inviting listeners to reveal their favourite walks in a quest to uncover Devon's most loved places to explore on foot.
听
Whether it is an historic stroll through town, a hike along the coastline or a trek into woodland, Radio Devon would like to hear details of your favourite route - including the length, ability level and geographical significance.
听
Reporter Jo Bishop, who walked 460 miles around the entire Devon border in 2003 for the Chestnut Appeal - raising 拢17,000 for prostate cancer - is co-ordinating the 25 Walks For 25 Years anniversary project.
听
Jo says: "Devon has a wealth of possibilities and I'm sure our listeners know where some of the gems are. All we need them to do is send us the details and then we'll feature the top 25 on air."
听
Jo and her dog Bella will walk some of the suggested routes with the nominees themselves and highlights of the walks will be featured on Pippa Quelch's Saturday Breakfast Show from 22 March to 6 September between 8 and 8.30am.
听
Also, to encourage others to share the scenic views and stories the county has to offer, guides to the best 25 rambles will be made available on the 成人快手's local website bbc.co.uk/devon.
听
Sue Britton, Chairman of Plymouth Ramblers, is supporting the idea.
听
She sums up the ingredients of a perfect short walk as: scenery, a little bit of a challenge, perhaps a climb to see a wonderful view, and selecting the right walk for the right season.
听
"There's nothing more stress relieving, I think, than going out to somewhere like Dartmoor and feeling the wind in your face," she says. "You seem to leave your problems behind."
听
Eric Wallis, secretary of the user group for Britain's longest national trail - the 630-mile South West Coast Path which runs from Minehead to Poole - shares Sue's passion for walking.
听
Eric says: "I am biased of course. For me the best short walk should be coastal and, preferably halfway along, have a nice village pub and then to go home feeling you have seen Britain at its best."
听
One particular stroll Eric enjoys is to Mothecombe beach at the mouth of the River Erme, close to his home in the South Hams.
听
He says: "It's one of the best parts of the coast path. The beauty of the Erme estuary is that it's completely undeveloped all the way through and so free from traffic and pollution."
听
Details of walks, including a full description of the walk's length, ability level and special personal significance, should be posted to: Jo Bishop, 成人快手 Radio Devon, Walnut Gardens, St David's Hill, Exeter EX4 4DH; or emailed by visiting bbc.co.uk/devon.
