The Merchant Sinfonia: a new community orchestra for Glasgow
|
The ³ÉÈË¿ìÊÖ Scottish Symphony Orchestra and Glasgow City Halls are forming a community orchestra for Glasgow – The Merchant Sinfonia.
Ìý
Open to anyone, regardless of previous musical experience, this new orchestra will meet on a weekly basis to explore a wide variety of orchestral repertoire and arrangements in a relaxed, social environment.
Ìý
Led by cellist and animateur Louise Martin, along with members of the ³ÉÈË¿ìÊÖ Scottish Symphony Orchestra (³ÉÈË¿ìÊÖ SSO), the sessions will be fun but focused, and will allow for players of all abilities to work together.
Ìý
Players of any orchestral instrument, aged 16 and over, will take part in the taster session at Old Fruitmarket on Sunday 25 November 2007 from 2 to 5pm, and open rehearsals will begin in January.
Ìý
The taster session will include musical warm-up games, a chance to work in small groups with musicians from the ³ÉÈË¿ìÊÖ SSO, and a play-through of some well-known music from the classical repertoire as a full orchestra.
Ìý
All players are welcome, from adult learners to advanced musicians, and those who haven't played for years.
Ìý
Louise Martin says: "The Merchant Sinfonia will be a great opportunity for people to get back into music, or to have a go at playing in an orchestra for the first time.
Ìý
"I meet so many people who say 'I wish I hadn't stopped playing!'; the Merchant Sinfonia is for all those musicians out there who think they're too rusty, too inexperienced, too busy or too nervous.
Ìý
"Everyone will be included and the emphasis will be strictly on having fun playing great music together.
Ìý
"If you love music, nothing beats the feeling of being 'inside' it that you get when playing as part of an orchestra, and to be able to do this with the help of the amazing musicians of the ³ÉÈË¿ìÊÖ SSO is the icing on the cake."
Ìý
The Merchant Sinfonia will meet for regular rehearsals on Tuesday evenings at City Halls from Tuesday 8 January 2008.
