³ÉÈË¿ìÊÖ Wales launches major multi-platform project
|
³ÉÈË¿ìÊÖ Wales's new major cross-platform project What's In A Name? launches its bilingual radio and online campaign on Friday 16 February - and they need help from the people of Wales.
Ìý
Fronted by respected journalist and author Trevor Fishlock and ³ÉÈË¿ìÊÖ Radio Cymru's Nia Roberts, the project explores the stories behind Welsh place names – a subject of lively debate in Wales. Now the programme makers are calling for the public to get involved.
Ìý
From Friday onwards listeners will be encouraged to log on, phone, text or email with their stories, explanations, queries and insights into the names of the places where they live.
Ìý
Trevor says: "It's a very exciting and fresh way to tell stories about the country. Everyone is interested in who they are and where they're from – researching place names is like looking at a big family tree.
Ìý
"Wales has developed from such a mixture of influences – there's a wonderful variety of place names, some quite mysterious. We'll act as detectives and with the help of experts we'll try to get to the bottom of their meanings.
Ìý
"The whole thing will be entirely interactive, covering television, radio and the web so that the public can really get involved. I'm certain that the programme will generate a lot of interest in Wales's history."
Ìý
Progress and ideas will be charted on Nia and Hywel's Radio Cymru show over the coming weeks as well as Roy Noble's ³ÉÈË¿ìÊÖ Radio Wales show.
Ìý
Research and ideas collected from the public will be used in a television programme to be broadcast later in the year.
Ìý
A comprehensive, interactive website – with a searchable database of definitions, myths and folklore surrounding Wales's place names – will be available from the end of March and will remain as a permanent resource.
Ìý
Both Trevor and Nia will be live in Lampeter at the ³ÉÈË¿ìÊÖ Wales roadshow on Friday morning for the launch.
Ìý
If you have any questions or ideas you'd like to put to the team about towns in your area then come along on the day or visit bbc.co.uk/whatsinaname or bbc.co.uk/bethsyddmewnenw.
Ìý
What's In a Name? is a joint production with South Wales independent company Torpedo.
