Six years of London Jazz Festival on Radio 3
|
成人快手 Radio 3 celebrates its sixth year as principal media partner of the London
Jazz Festival next month.
听
From 10 November 2006, London Jazz Festival performances will
be featured on Radio 3's comprehensive jazz output - Jazz on 3 and Jazz Line-Up - as well as in world and contemporary music programmes including Late
Junction, World Routes and Andy Kershaw, bringing the London Jazz Festival to a
wider audience.
听
A selection of concerts can also be replayed for up to a year after the
original broadcasts with Radio 3's Interactive Listen On Demand service at
bbc.co.uk/radio3.

Jazz on 3
听
Friday 10 November, 10.30pm-1.00am, Live from PizzaExpress
听
Radio 3's cutting edge contemporary jazz show fronted by Jez Nelson comes live
from the Pizza Express jazz club in London's Soho, on the festival's opening
night.
听
The programme includes a rare UK appearance by New York piano master
Randy Weston; revered British composer and pianist Mike Westbrook's Village
Band; UK saxophonist Martin Speake's quartet and pioneering saxophonist Evan
Parker will perform alongside the US bassist Henry Grimes.
听
The programme also
includes music from the Barbican where Wayne Shorter performs his first UK date
for two years alongside his all-star acoustic quartet.

Dave Holland's 60th birthday concert with Dave Holland Quintet including
saxophonist Chris Potter, trombonist Robin Eubanks and vibraphonist Steve
Nelson.

Herbie Hancock Quartet at The Roundhouse, Saturday 11 November (tx tbc)
听
Jazz returns to the Roundhouse with a giant of modern jazz. Herbie Hancock's
association with the transition between the acoustic and the electric Miles
Davies bands helped redefine the jazz rhythm section.

Randy Weston at Queen Elizabeth Hall, Thursday 16 November (tx Saturday 18 November 4.00-5.00pm)
听
Pianist Randy Weston is one of jazz's visionaries; starting in the late Forties
his career has incorporated Monk-inspired bop, African and Caribbean rhythms
and tunes - a true world musician.
听
In a special concert created for the
Festival, he collaborates with the 成人快手 Big Band on arrangements of work from
his prolific career.
听
Guy Barker at Maida Vale, Saturday 18 November (tx Saturday 25 November)
听
Guy Barker's new extended work-in-progress, dZF, commissioned by Radio 3 for
Jazz Line-Up, is inspired by Guy's passion for Mozart. Working with thriller
writer Rob Ryan, dZf re-invents the weird and wonderful story of Mozart's The
Magic Flute as New York jazz noir.

John Taylor Trio & Gwilym Simcock Trio at Wigmore Hall (Friday 17 November, tx tbc)
听
John Taylor's international trio share the bill with his former student's trio,
whilst they will be playing separately John and Gwilym will also play a short
set together.
听
Gwilym Simcock, received the Rising Star award at last year's 成人快手
Jazz Awards, and has just been named as Radio 3's first-ever jazz New
Generation Artist.
听
Christine Tobin at The Royal Opera House, Sunday 12 November (tx tbc)
听
Acclaimed Irish-born singer/songwriter Christine Tobin premieres a new acoustic
group featuring cellist Kate Shortt, Liam Noble on piano and Austrian jazz
musician of the year, Peter Herbert on bass.
听
World Routes - presented by Lucy Duran
听
Gamelan Shokbreker at Union Chapel, Saturday 11 November (tx Saturday 18 November, 3.00-4.00pm)
听
Gamelan Shokbreker is a unique collaborative project which brings together nine
musicians and a dancer from West Java and four musicians from Norway.
听
This
special concert features the SambaSunda orchestra led by Ismet Ruchimat, and
from Norway, Patrick Shaw Iversen, DJ Strangefruit, Steinar Vaernes and Peter
Baden.

Sara Tavares at the Purcell Room, Friday 17 November (tx Saturday 13 January 2007, 3.00-4.00pm)
听
Sara Tavares grew up in a Lisbon immigrant community, and the rich cultural mix
of her surroundings is expressed in her warm, graceful songs - an eclectic mix
of Cape Verdean morna, African juju and highlife, Portuguese fado, Brazilian
pop and reggae.
听
Tcheka & Modeste Hughes at The Purcell Room, Saturday 18 November (tx Saturday 13 January 2007, 3.00-4.00pm)
听
Making his UK debut, Tcheka is a young Cape Verdean; his modern latin and jazz-inflected interpretation of Santiago's popular batuque rhythm combines
impressive song-writing abilities with sweet guitar lines and resonant vocals.
听
Acclaimed singer-songwriter Modeste Hugues hails from Madagascar; influenced by
the traditional sounds of his native Batroka region, he offers a joyous, dance-orientated musical style emanating tropical warmth and vitality.
听
Late Junction - presented by Fiona Talkington
听
Radio 3's late night eclectic music show bridges the gap between jazz and new
music at the London Jazz Festival.

Oregon at Queen Elizabeth Hall, Sunday 12 November (tx Monday 20 November, 10.15pm-midnight)
听
In their first London concert in many years Oregon perform their fresh and
appealing music that defies definition, incorporating an intricate mix of
classical, jazz and world music.

Nik Bartsch at The Purcell Room, Friday 10 November (tx tbc)

Pianist and composer Bartsch performs the UK premiere of Stoa, the much admired
ECM recording by Ronin.

Wibutee at the ICA, Saturday 11 November (tx tbc)
听
Wibutee are Norway's number one electro-jazz outfitits, their individual
members have worked with everyone from Pat Metheny to John Scofield.

EST at the Barbican, Thursday 16 November (tx tbc)
听
The traditional jazz piano trio format is transformed by EST's unique style
and attitude - hard-edged drum and bass rhythms jostle with Hendrix-like
distortions and memorable original songs.

Solveig Slettajhell & Iilmiliekki, Friday 17 November (tx tbc)
听
A double bill of Nordic bands who reflect the next generation's take on
acoustic jazz. Norwegian singer Solveig is followed by Finnish quintet
Ilmiliekki who are influenced by jazz masters such as Ornette Coleman alongside
contemporary music icons Bj枚rk and Radiohead.

Tokyo Chutei Iki at Pizza On the Park, Friday 10 & Saturday 11 November (tx Sunday 19 November, 10.30pm-midnight)

Tokyo Chutei Iki means "Tokyo Bass Frequency" which is what can be expected
from the 10strong baritone saxophonists who open the festival with a two night
residency.
