Calling young composers: 成人快手 Proms and The Guardian launch 2006 Young Composers competition

The 成人快手 Proms and The Guardian newspaper today began calling for composers between the ages of 12 and 18 to enter the 成人快手 Proms/Guardian Young Composers competition.

The competition is now in its eighth year and widely regarded as one of the most important competitions of its type. Close to 700 people entered in 2005.

The competition aims to seek out some of the most creative and talented young people in the UK; to provide a forum for all entrants to meet each other, share experiences and meet professional musicians and composers; and, above all, to inspire them to continue to compose.

It is judged by a prestigious panel of composers and music professionals including Judith Bingham, Tansy Davies, Murray Gold, Colin Matthews, Fraser Trainer, Errollyn Wallen and Peter Weigold.

All winners - in two age categories - will have their work broadcast on 成人快手 Radio 3 following a special concert by Endymion at Cadogan Hall on 11 August.

They, along with some highly commended entrants, will also have the opportunity to meet Sir Peter Maxwell Davies at the Winner's Day on 19 July.

Winners in the 12-16 category will each receive a Casio keyboard, while winners in the 16-18 category will receive a full Sibelius four music-notation package.

The competition is not just about winners. All of the entrants are invited to INSPIRE: a free day of creative music-making on 11 August.

They will have the chance to meet celebrated composer/conductor John Adams, to meet other young composers, take part in practical sessions, listen to a concert including the winning pieces and attend a 成人快手 Proms concert in the Royal Albert Hall.
