The Manchester United Assistant Coach, Carlos Queir贸s, is returning to his home country of Mozambique on 3 October with the 成人快手 World Service to make a documentary about the power of football as a positive force for social change.
听
Carlos left Mozambique for an international career in football which has taken him to Europe, Asia and Amercia.
听
He returns home regularly but this month, just as the country celebrates 30 years of independence, he takes the 成人快手 on a 10 day tour so he can explore how, despite Mozambique's recent history of natural disasters and civil conflict, football manages to instil a spirit of goodwill.
听
A special edition of the English language flagship sports programme, World Football, is dedicated to Carlos' trip to Mozambique - broadcast on Saturday 15 October.
听
Highlights from his tour will also be featured on the 成人快手 World Service English language programmes World Today and World Football; on the 成人快手 African English programmes Fast Track; on the 成人快手's partner radio station, Radio Mozambique; on the 成人快手's Portuguese for Africa service; and on the 成人快手 Radio Five Live.
听
Carlos is also writing a diary of his trip for 成人快手 Sport online.
听
Carlos says he is determined to use his celebrity status to raise awareness of social issues in Mozambique: "There is a saying my country - 'the good son returns home'. And that is exactly what I am doing with this trip. Going home to show the world why football is an important force for good.
听
"Over half the population in Mozambique is under 18. Poor sanitation, landmines, over-crowded conditions, homeless children, a gang culture - all these create serious health and social risks for Mozambique's young population.
听
"Yet football unites them - bringing them together and providing opportunities to spread messages of goodwill."
听
World Football producer Mike Geddes adds: "Football is really much more than a game to the people of Mozambique and who better to show us this than one of its most famous sons?
听
"Our programme specialises in featuring stories from the sidelines of football - the human impact of this global sport.
听
"I am confident Carlos is going to bring Mozambique's relationship with football alive - bringing a unique and fascinating perspective to millions of listeners across the world."
听
Carlos kick-starts his trip with a visit to his home village of Nampula and the school where he first kicked a football.
听
He also travels to the island Ilha de Mozambique where rival factions have come to an understanding thanks to their love of football, and to the country's capital Maputo where homeless children formed a football team which is now among the best young sides in Mozambique.
听
In Maputo Carlos also joins UNICEF aid workers immunising children against polio and measles.
听
Later he attends a local football game where condoms are handed out with match tickets, to help fight HIV/Aids.
听
Carlos is a active supporter of UNICEF, through Manchester United's partnership with the organisation United for UNICEF.
听
Off-air Carlos takes part in a media training workshop for Radio Mozambique, organised by 成人快手 World Service.
