David Beckham with Ron Manager (Paul Whitehouse)

David Beckham signs for Sport Relief

Before he jetted off to Portugal with the England team, David Beckham took time out from his busy schedule to record a short film to support Sport Relief '04 which will be shown on Sport Relief on Saturday.

David has worked under some of the greatest managers in the game from Alex Ferguson at Manchester United to England coach Sven-Goran Eriksson.

But David has had a long-standing ambition to work with one of the games legends, Ron Manager, and when the opportunity came up he jumped straight on a plane back from Madrid.

David agreed to be interviewed by Ron (Paul Whitehouse) and was delighted to listen to the wise words of someone with so much experience in the game.

After talking tactics - from long balls to golden balls - the conversation moved to David's love of bling, with Ron revealing a surprising love of 50 Cent, and even dressing as his rapping hero.

The England captain wasn't to be out done though and he revealed that he could do a pretty good David Beckham impression, and after taking in four balloons worth of helium, he proved it!

After the interview was over, Ron Manager couldn't control his excitement and said: "Thank-you David, straight man, family man, husband, gay man, white man, black man, don Juan, stupid boy, captain courageous, model, footballer, ambassador and galactico, but most of all, thank-you David Beckham... human being. Isn't it... marvellous."

While David, as ever, didn't let the excitement of the moment get to him and stayed focussed: "Sport Relief Saturday sounds like it聮s going to be a great day.

"I'm sure people all around the country will really get behind it and go the extra mile to help change a lot of people's lives."

Ron Manager's interview with David will be shown on Sport Relief Saturday, 10 July, on 成人快手 ONE as part of what is set to be a star-studded night of Sport Relief entertainment.

There聮s a block-busting line-up of fantastic programmes featuring contributions from an array of sporting personalities and celebrity sports fans, including Patrick Kielty, Nick Hancock, Ray Stubbs, Sid Owen, Ben Fogle, Cilla Black, Angus Deayton, and many many more.

The night's entertainment will include: a return of the popular Seventies show, Superstars; the ultimate battle of the sports quiz shows in They Think It's All A Question of Sport; Ben Fogle and Sid Owen take part in one of the biggest boxing showdowns of all time; and players from the sports of rugby and football battle it out to find out once and for all which is the greatest sport.

David's wife, Victoria, has also given her support to Sport Relief '04.

She recently visited Peru to meet 11-year-old Dinah, who lives and works on a rubbish tip, to see how money raised by Sport Relief is improving her life.

Victoria and Dinah featured in the Sport Relief documentary, A Mile in Their Shoes, broadcast on Sunday 27 June on 成人快手 ONE.

Sport Relief was set up by Comic Relief and 成人快手 Sport to tackle poverty and disadvantage, both in the UK and internationally.

Its debut in 2002 raised more than 拢14 million, and that money is now hard at work.

This time around, the vision is to harness the power, passion and goodness of sport to help change the world.

Venues up and down the country will host the Fitness First Sport Relief Mile and some of the best known faces from the world of sport and entertainment will line up alongside the public as the whole nation comes together to be part of a very special day.

Rachel Stevens, Sir Steve Redgrave, Jo Brand, Alec Stewart, Gordon Ramsay, Nick Faldo, Colin Jackson and Nicki Chapman are just some of the names who have already signed up, with more coming on board by the day.

There's no need to be a sporty person to get involved. Just sign up, get sponsored, and be there on Sport Relief Saturday to help change the world by miles.

Notes to Editors

What is Sport Relief?

Sport Relief was set up by Comic Relief and 成人快手 Sport to use the power and passion of sport to tackle poverty and disadvantage, both in the UK and in some of the world's poorest countries.

What is happening this year?

14 venues up and down the country will host the Fitness First Sport Relief Mile and well-known faces from the world of sport and entertainment will line up alongside the public as the whole nation comes together to "Go the Extra Mile".

Sport Relief Saturday concludes with a night of spectacular unmissable TV on 成人快手 ONE.

The Fitness First Sport Relief Mile comes in two distinct flavours with the Time Trial Mile for people who want to set themselves a target, and the Freestyle Mile for all those who want more fun and less run by doing it any way they want.

The other half will be spent on work trying to help kids who are having really tough lives in some of the poorest countries in the world.

Sport Relief history

Sport Relief made its debut in 2002 and raised a staggering 拢14.4 million.

The first Sport Relief in 2002 saw some seriously big names - David Beckham, Nelson Mandela, Muhammad Ali, Michael Owen and Denise Lewis, to name but a few.

In the UK, Sport Relief '02 cash is levelling the playing field - helping tackle poverty and bringing young people that have been divided by conflict and tension together through sport.

Overseas, Sport Relief '02 is helping children like 10-year-old Elisabeth, who lives in Peru. Elisabeth used to get up at 5.00am every day to work in the quarry making bricks.

Thanks to the money that everyone helped to raise, Elisabeth can now go to school and be a child again.

Sport Relief is an initiative of Comic Relief, registered charity 326568.
