Welshpool
girl chosen as Welsh team mascot
A 13-year-old
girl from Welshpool has won a ³ÉÈË¿ìÊÖ Radio Wales competition to be
mascot for the Welsh football team in their crunch Euro 2004 qualifier
against Serbia & Montenegro on Saturday (11 October).
Stella
Roberts was nominated for the honour by her grandmother, Margaret
Herdman, who saw Stella as the perfect candidate for a competition
which rewarded a child between the ages of eight and 14 for doing
something out of the ordinary.
Stella
will lead Mark Hughes' men out at Cardiff's Millennium Stadium on
Saturday evening.
In
her letter to ³ÉÈË¿ìÊÖ Radio Wales, Stella's grandmother, Mrs Herdman,
explained: "I would like to nominate my 13-year-old granddaughter,
Stella Roberts, to be Welsh mascot because Stella is the youngest
child, having two brothers.
"She
plays a major part in caring for her mum on a daily basis who is
wheelchair bound suffering with multiple sclerosis. They enjoy watching
football on television, while her brothers are out with their dad.
Stella deserves to be Welsh mascot."
³ÉÈË¿ìÊÖ
Radio Wales presenter, Roy Noble, who launched the competition on
his morning show, explained:
"We
set out to reward a child that goes the extra mile to help his family,
friends or the community. So many children help out quietly, behind
closed doors and never receive any recognition for their efforts.
"We
were looking for someone who did out of the ordinary stuff on a
daily basis and Stella captured our hearts when we heard about the
care she gives her mum Jane who suffers from multiple sclerosis.
"Leading
the Welsh team onto the field in such an important game is a huge
honour – it will be a once in a life time experience for the
mascot and the perfect way to say thank you."
Eyes
all over Europe will be on the chosen mascot as the game, which
kicks off at 7.45pm, will be broadcast on ³ÉÈË¿ìÊÖ 2W. Viewers across
Wales can also see it on ³ÉÈË¿ìÊÖ TWO Wales.
