Paula Radcliffe races in world's biggest half marathon live on ³ÉÈË¿ìÊÖ ONE

Britain's golden girl, Paula Radcliffe, will compete in the 23rd BUPA Great North Run - the world's most famous half marathon and Britain's biggest mass participation event - exclusively live on ³ÉÈË¿ìÊÖ ONE on Sunday 21 September (9.30am – 1.30pm).

The outstanding quality of the elite field makes the race the strongest prior to the Athens Olympics next year and the last opportunity to see the top women distance runners compete against each other ahead of the Olympic Games.

10,000 metre and marathon world record holder Paula Radcliffe will race against Berhane Adere, 10,000 metre World Champion, Derartu Tulu, Olympic 10,000 metre title holder, Susan Chepkemei, the world's fastest-ever female half marathoner and Sonia O'Sullivan, the defending champion.

In the mens race, Olympic and World half marathon champion, Paul Kosgei, will return to Tyneside to defend his title after last year's classic which saw the Kenyan break the 60-minute half marathon barrier for the first time in the UK.

Sue Barker will present ³ÉÈË¿ìÊÖ Television's live coverage with commentators Steve Cram, Liz McColgan, Charlie Spedding and Paul Dickenson.

Viewers can also catch the highlights programme with Roger Black on ³ÉÈË¿ìÊÖ TWO later the same day (6.15-7.00pm).

The biggest ever field will gather on the start line - nearly 50,000 competitors are set to follow the route from Newcastle to South Shields, crossing the famous Tyne Bridge and raising millions for charity.

A host of celebrities will be lacing up their running shoes to raise valuable money for their chosen charitiy.

This year's celebrity list includes the founder of the Great North Run and ³ÉÈË¿ìÊÖ commentator, Olympian Brendan Foster, acclaimed British actress Brenda Blethyn, celebrity chef Gordon Ramsay, ³ÉÈË¿ìÊÖ Sport's Rob Bonnet, John Motson, Ray Stubbs, Mark Bright, Garth Crooks and Mark Lawrenson, ³ÉÈË¿ìÊÖ Weather presenter Helen Willetts, Minister for Sport Richard Caborn, Olympic rower Matthew Pinsent and former jockey Richard Dunwoody.

The race attracts thousands of amateur runners with extraordinarily inspirational stories to tell.

Taking part this year is one of the original WI Calendar Girls, the subject of the current movie of the same name; a man who has been training solely on a treadmill aboard a North Sea gas rig; a mother of three who has lost half her bodyweight in less than a year and a team of top London chefs from The Savoy, Claridges and The Dorchester who are getting out of the kitchen for the day.

³ÉÈË¿ìÊÖ ONE's Grandstand also has coverage of The Great North Mile race on Saturday 20 September (Athletics Focus, 1.05pm) in which Kelly Holmes and Hayley Tullet, two of Britain's medallists from the 2003 World Championships, are competing.

C³ÉÈË¿ìÊÖ has live coverage of the 4 kilometres Junior Great North Run on Saturday 20 September (3.00-4.00pm) and the C³ÉÈË¿ìÊÖ Great North Party hosted by Konnie Huq (6.00-7.00pm) where Danni Minogue, Atomic Kitten, D-Side and Blazin Squad will be playing.

The junior race sees six thousand young people taking part in the biggest junior event in the UK, raising hopes that a new crop of champion distance runners will follow in Paula Radcliffe's steps.
