Radio Cumbria wins Sony Award
³ÉÈË¿ìÊÖ
Radio Cumbria has been successful at the country's most coveted
radio ceremony for the second year running.
The
station was awarded Bronze in the Sport category at the Sony Radio
Academy Awards, at a ceremony in the Grosvenor House Hotel, Park
Lane, London.
The
station was nominated for its Carlisle United Debate in the Saturday
Sport programme.
³ÉÈË¿ìÊÖ
Radio Cumbria brought the then Carlisle United owner Michael Knighton
together with businessman John Courtenay, who was bidding for the
club at the time.
It
was the first time the two men had come together for a public debate
– which also included members of the supporters' trust and
a representative of the News & Star newspaper.
Competition
in the Sport category came from ³ÉÈË¿ìÊÖ World Service, Capital Gold
and ³ÉÈË¿ìÊÖ Radio Five Live.
The
judges said: "The programme was firmly rooted in its community,
knowledgeable of its audience and subject matter and covered the
issues head on with confidence.
"This
debate was well produced and was skilfully presented and chaired
by Paul Newton and Graham Moss.
"The
programme developed its themes with a well judged crescendo, creating
passionate and gripping radio."

Radio Cumbria's managing editor Nigel Dyson says: "We're absolutely
delighted. It's a fantastic honour and a credit to all of the ³ÉÈË¿ìÊÖ
Radio Cumbria team."
³ÉÈË¿ìÊÖ's
Head of Regional and Local Programming in the North East & Cumbria,
Wendy Pilmer, adds:

in times of crisis, such as foot and mouth, which shows good journalism
connecting with the passions and concerns of the county and its
people.
"This
dedication sums up what local public service broadcasting is all
about and this is a totally deserved recognition by the radio industry."
Last
year ³ÉÈË¿ìÊÖ Radio Cumbria was named Station of the Year in the 300,000
to one million listeners category.
It
won the award for its coverage of the foot and mouth crisis across
the county.
It
also won a Silver award last year for best community programme.
