According
to the blurb this is a darkly funny look at the disillusioned Krapp
on his 69th Birthday. So I was expecting to laugh and the bananas
promised and delivered a chuckle or two. As did the star of the
show with his wonderfully expressive face and elderly gait. This
one act play in the later part of the evening is about the later
parts of one mans life. A man who lives by the tape, dies by the
tape.
If
you want to get away from the hurly burly world of exams and the
stresses of modern life, this is the place to be. The classical
music, the dark room, the calming presence of a wise elder, the
meditative almost hypnotic confessions of the magnificent Aaron
Costas Ganis as Krapp. What more could you want? Well some incense
sticks would have been useful.
Somewhere
in the not too distant future you too may sit down in reflective
mood. How many hopes and dreams will you have achieved in your life
thus far? What path did you take? The single-minded career focused
expressway or the circuitous ring road around your familiar hometown
leading nowhere and avoiding all exit signs to the big bright city.
Let's
hope that you won't find yourself listening intently to the incomprehensible
profundities and absurdities of your younger self. Still who can
advise the young? They are born knowing everything with a certainty
that is hard to displace. No wonder Krapp is disillusioned!
If
we only knew then what we know now what a life we could have led.
Someone build me a time machine please!
