Judith Durham.

Judy Charlton was saddened to hear that this amazing Australian singer will shortly be giving up the mic.

But this didn't stop her having a great time at the Apollo.

Judith Durham
June 05
The Oxford Apollo

By Judy Charlton

A black sky background with hundreds of bright little stars, plus one piano and 2 keyboards, all that the stage needed last evening when Judith Durham gave her performance in Oxford.

The two keyboard players gave a few moments of introductory music, then from the wings came the "Clear as a Bell" voice of Judith, an electrifying moment for everyone in the audience. Once the music faded she came on to rapturous applause.

Never having seen her in the flesh before I was surprised to see how tiny and petite Judith is and how beautiful the long-flowing brown hair is.

She was simply dressed in a flowing black dress, with silver buckle and a long overcoat with a touch of silver. So elegant.

She clearly was pleased to be in England, then with a big smile and a twinkle in her eye she launched into the first act with a song entitled "Wonderful Australia"!

This was a cheeky-chirpy number sung with her true Australian accent, delightfully performed. The audience laughed as they applauded. Then showing her true professionalism she introduced the two Keyboard players Martin and Greg who gave such excellent support throughout the show.

We were then truly held spell-bound for an hour of wonderful songs such as "Life is a Journey", "You've Got a Friend", "Pure Love in my Heart", "No Mother could be lovelier then you" and a selection from the 20's and 30's, If you remember songs like "You belong to Me", "It's Impossible", "Wonderful" -as the audience did - then you'll enjoy this show.

The interval came too quickly and after the break Judith returned in a red outfit which was very elegant and attractive.

She quickly went into a programme for another hour enchanting everyone with popular songs. Again the programme included Jazz and more favourites such as "It's hard to Leave" and "The Carnival is Over".

The audience were spellbound with the whole performance. She richly deserved the standing ovations she was given on two occasions and the audience clearly did not want the show to finish.

I was delighted to find that there was a fair sprinkling of young people watching the show as well as a huge following of those who must have admired Judith throughout her career.

I would recommend this Show to anyone sadly Judith told us, that she now has a bronchitis illness which will eventually mean no more singing, but she is determined to carry on until she just cannot cope any longer! She is an amazing, beautiful lady. Lots of luck Judith you are a true blue ozzie.
