When did the band realise it had gone from being another Oxford group to a nationally-known institution?

I suppose that around the release of the single Anone Can Play Guitar, off Pablo Honey, that's when we were very much a nationally-recognised band.

We'd gone around playing all the small venues in the country and then in the tour around that single, all those venues were selling out. We thought then we must be getting some recognition.

That was at the beginning of 1993 and then later on that year Creep took off in the States. We were suddently getting acclaim in other countries.

That was a shock, we hadn't been expecting to be at that stage then, if ever really.

OK Computer became a massively successful album.
When you were recording it did you get the feeling you were making something special?

I don't know if you ever have that degree of objectivity, the distance from it to think that. You have these worries about whether you're doing the material justice.

There are some points when we thought it was a special moment. When we were recording things like "Climbing Up The Walls", what you hear on the record is pretty much what went down as we were playing it that night.

There was the mixture of sounds there, the performance, everything. It all gelled in that one moment - it hadn't sounded like that before. That was very exciting.

On Kid A and Amnesiac the band's gone away from the guitar-based rock songs in favour of atmospherics and drum machines.
Have you felt marginalised on a personal level?

It was a different experience recording those albums. It's healthy to have other inputs in the creative side of things.
Also, what you do in the studio is one thing and then going out and playing it live is another.

There are certain things you claim for yourself I think. That's part of the reason for releasing the live album, the fact that we had all the different versions of the songs that were valid in themselves.

Radiohead have made music in so many different styles. What will the next album be like?
Hopefully we won't have stood still and we will have progressed.
Until we get in there and start playing around with all the little bits of equipment that are around, and seeing what we can put together between the five of us it's unknown what the next stage will sound like.
