At one time there was talk of dismantling Banbury Cross because it was a traffic obstruction, but campaigners in America threatened never to visit the town again if the plan was carried out. Attitudes to local heritage have changed and now, like nearby St Mary's Church, the cross is a Grade 1 listed structure.
