A
modern brick artwork marks the current terminus of the Oxford
Canal.
The
canal empties into the Thames opposite Hythe Bridge Street
There
are plans to excavate the original canal wharves under the Worcester
Street car park, complete with shops and cafes.
The
car park is owned by Nuffield College - whose pond lies along
the line of a lost section of the canal.
Oxford
has its own community of boat people, with gardens and barbecues
on the towpath. They inspired the canal dwellers in Philip
Pullman's Dark Materials novels.
Smart
flats are taking over from industrial buildings along the
canal.
Oxford
may not be making the best use of the canal... but some people
definitely have the right idea.
