So I\rquote d been having a few problems and Scott\rquote s mum actually has MS but she has a different type, she has progressive MS which is different to what I\rquote ve got which is relapsing remitting. So we\rquote d been kind of talking about it but I was getting this weird buzzing sensation every time I tilted my head forward I\rquote d get sort of an electric shock down my spine. We did this feature on the show where we read out each other\rquote s texts and I\rquote d sent one to Scott going, \ldblquote Oops buzzing again off to the doctors\rdblquote or something. And we were sort of going, \ldblquote Ha ha yeah Beccy vibrates, not in a good way, you know, she\rquote s not one of them.\rdblquote And actually a listener emailed and said you know this could be Lhermitte syndrome I think it\rquote s called, and it\rquote s a symptom of MS. Like my boyfriend\rquote s mum rang up and went, \ldblquote Oh when are you getting your boobs done?\rdblquote And I was like, \ldblquote I\rquote m what?\rdblquote And she\rquote d heard like one bit of the show and another bit put two and two together and thought I was having a boob job. It\rquote s very difficult because you want to reveal but also you don\rquote t want to be in a position where you\rquote re sort of compromising yourself too much and people get the wrong idea. I just think well for me the more people that know about it the more people that are going to be there to help me and the more people that are going to be able to understand and help other people. It\rquote s an interesting route for the media to take we\rquote re so used to issues of disability and sex being very silenced, particularly in mainstream media. And the fact that the media has now kind of run with many of these headlines and these news stories about disability and sex makes for a very interesting time and some very interesting questions about disability and sex. \cell\row\trowd\trgaph108\trleft-142\trpaddl108\trpaddr108\trpaddfl3\trpaddfr3 \cellx1895\cellx8979\pard\intbl\sa600\caps liz\cell\caps0 Yeah because on one hand it\rquote s disability and sex is taboo, but actually it feels like people are talking an awful lot about sex. \cell\row\trowd\trgaph108\trleft-142\trpaddl108\trpaddr108\trpaddfl3\trpaddfr3 \cellx1895\cellx8979\pard\intbl\sa600\caps kirsty\cell\caps0 Very much so. There seems to be a kind of very natural curiosity I don\rquote t know where that quite stems from. But I think that even though some of the headlines are problematic in the way they put disability and sex across. I think it\rquote s really important that they\rquote re starting dialogues and conversations around disability and sex which I think can never be a bad thing. \cell\row\trowd\trgaph108\trleft-142\trpaddl108\trpaddr108\trpaddfl3\trpaddfr3 \cellx1895\cellx8979\pard\intbl\sa600\caps liz\cell\caps0 We asked people on Twitter you know what is the biggest a barrier to a relationship for you as a disabled person. We got so many responses and some, there\rquote s actually one I want to read out: Mel Griffiths tweeted she said, \ldblquote I think the majority of sighted men are afraid to date a blind person. There seems to be more blind men with sighted partners than blind women with sighted partners.\rdblquote \cell\row\trowd\trgaph108\trleft-142\trpaddl108\trpaddr108\trpaddfl3\trpaddfr3 \cellx1895\cellx8979\pard\intbl\sa600\caps kirsty\cell\caps0 That\rquote s interesting. \cell\row\trowd\trgaph108\trleft-142\trpaddl108\trpaddr108\trpaddfl3\trpaddfr3 \cellx1895\cellx8979\pard\intbl\sa600\caps liz\cell\caps0 And you know and I\rquote m just wondering are non-disabled women more likely to go for a disabled partner because they think, you know, disabled men are more caring, is there that playing as well? \cell\row\trowd\trgaph108\trleft-142\trpaddl108\trpaddr108\trpaddfl3\trpaddfr3 \cellx1895\cellx8979\pard\intbl\sa600\caps kirsty\cell\caps0 I don\rquote t know that could be an argument. The rates of marriage are higher in disabled men than for disabled women. But I think this goes back to a gender thing of men in patriarchal society have greater experiences of social and sexual power so maybe that\rquote s a factor in why disabled men are more likely to marry than disabled women. \cell\row\trowd\trgaph108\trleft-142\trpaddl108\trpaddr108\trpaddfl3\trpaddfr3 \cellx1895\cellx8979\pard\intbl\sa600\caps liz\cell\caps0 It seems like it\rquote s a real tug of war though if you're a disabled person because a lot of people tweeted in about having people see past them being disabled and seeing who they are. But then others of course wrote in and said they need to know the reality. Megan wrote in and she said for her the barrier is having your partner watch your health deteriorate quickly from being fairly symptom-less to then multiple hospital appointments all within the space of two years. So there\rquote s this, you know, we\rquote re sort of in battle aren\rquote t we; we want people to love us and see us for who we are, but as part of that they also need to see the reality. \cell\row\trowd\trgaph108\trleft-142\trpaddl108\trpaddr108\trpaddfl3\trpaddfr3 \cellx1895\cellx8979\pard\intbl\sa600\caps rob\cell\caps0 At your weakest and most vulnerable I suppose. \cell\row\trowd\trgaph108\trleft-142\trpaddl108\trpaddr108\trpaddfl3\trpaddfr3 \cellx1895\cellx8979\pard\intbl\sa600\caps liz\cell\caps0 Yeah.\cell\row\trowd\trgaph108\trleft-142\trpaddl108\trpaddr108\trpaddfl3\trpaddfr3 \cellx1895\cellx8979\pard\intbl\sa600\caps kirsty\cell\caps0 Disability can impact on intimate relationships in quite a significant way, there\rquote s no way of getting round that, as you say that\rquote s the reality of living with an impaired body in an ablest society. But I do think that disability and impairment can bring also many benefits to people\rquote s intimate relationships in really quite unique and special ways. I had one couple that took part in my research and they did talk about the reality of care and caring and the reality of health issues and how they were quite impactful particularly to sexual life at points. But then they kind of told their story of, not overcoming those issues, but working around those issues in quite a productive way. \cell\row\trowd\trgaph108\trleft-142\trpaddl108\trpaddr108\trpaddfl3\trpaddfr3 \cellx1895\cellx8979\pard\intbl\sa600\caps rob\cell\caps0 It seems like there must be an overriding sense and I don\rquote t know if you feel this personally in your life, but just a feeling of frustration about having all these hurdles in front of you, because obviously some people are able to hurdle over them with relative ease, but for many others they can\rquote t they fall at the first fence. \cell\row\trowd\trgaph108\trleft-142\trpaddl108\trpaddr108\trpaddfl3\trpaddfr3 \cellx1895\cellx8979\pard\intbl\sa600\caps kirsty\cell\caps0 The stories of young people are something I have a particular interest in because their sexuality and their sexual stories were\'85the things they talked about within their sexual stories such as lack of privacy, not having\'85 And issues with parents particularly was a real issue. Having basic physical access to places like nightclubs and pubs which is still quite dire. \cell\row\trowd\trgaph108\trleft-142\trpaddl108\trpaddr108\trpaddfl3\trpaddfr3 \cellx1895\cellx8979\pard\intbl\sa600\caps rob\cell\caps0 When you say lack of privacy do you mean in the sense of needing assistance all or most of the time?\cell\row\trowd\trgaph108\trleft-142\trpaddl108\trpaddr108\trpaddfl3\trpaddfr3 \cellx1895\cellx8979\pard\intbl\sa600\caps kirsty\cell\caps0 Yeah. I think when you have a body that needs to be cared for in some way you have a very different relationship with privacy than I would imagine for most non-disabled people. And we think about sex and sexuality and they are inherently private things, so when you have a body that needs people to assist it or assist you that can change how sexuality and privacy interact. \cell\row\trowd\trgaph108\trleft-142\trpaddl108\trpaddr108\trpaddfl3\trpaddfr3 \cellx1895\cellx8979\pard\intbl\sa600\caps liz\cell\caps0 How do you get into disability and sex and studying it, what\rquote s your\'85how did you get to this, are you just nosey about people\rquote s sex. \cell\row\trowd\trgaph108\trleft-142\trpaddl108\trpaddr108\trpaddfl3\trpaddfr3 \cellx1895\cellx8979\pard\intbl\sa600\caps kirsty\cell\caps0 If I had a pound every time somebody asked me that question I\rquote d be a very rich woman. It\rquote s a good question. I was very interested in disability studies, I did my undergraduate degree in sociology and reading around disability studies literature and activism I noticed that there was a kind of marked gap where we would research disabled people\rquote s experiences of transport, of education, of employment and those kind of systemic structural barriers to disabled people\rquote s lives. There\rquote s a far lesser research and activist focus on the private and more intimate parts of disabled people\rquote s lives. So that was kind of what was\'85 I was questioning why that silence was there and I wanted to find out more about what disabled people thought, what were their experiences of sexuality and intimacy. \cell\row\trowd\trgaph108\trleft-142\trpaddl108\trpaddr108\trpaddfl3\trpaddfr3 \cellx1895\cellx8979\pard\intbl\sa600\caps LIZ\cell\caps0 So it fascinated you basically? \cell\row\trowd\trgaph108\trleft-142\trpaddl108\trpaddr108\trpaddfl3\trpaddfr3 \cellx1895\cellx8979\pard\intbl\sa600\caps kirsty\cell\caps0 Absolutely. \cell\row\trowd\trgaph108\trleft-142\trpaddl108\trpaddr108\trpaddfl3\trpaddfr3 \cellx1895\cellx8979\pard\intbl\sa600\caps liz\cell\caps0 And what are you looking at\'85the debate\rquote s about should prostitutes going into care homes you know has really hit the headlines and a lot of responses to that. But also about a brothel being open, you know, but not being called a brothel almost being called a clinic. Do we need, you know, do disabled people do we need these services or do we just need relationships?\cell\row\trowd\trgaph108\trleft-142\trpaddl108\trpaddr108\trpaddfl3\trpaddfr3 \cellx1895\cellx8979\pard\intbl\sa600\caps rob\cell\caps0 Isn\rquote t calling it a clinic a bit sterile, let\rquote s just be a bit more honest here shall we?\cell\row\trowd\trgaph108\trleft-142\trpaddl108\trpaddr108\trpaddfl3\trpaddfr3 \cellx1895\cellx8979\pard\intbl\sa600\caps kirsty\cell\caps0 Yeah I think that\rquote s a very interesting point and that\rquote s certainly something that I would agree with, that when we talk about disability and sex work we have to frame it in this very therapeutic and rehabilitative call it a sexual health centre kind of way, why is it not okay for disabled people to go to a brothel and pay for sex in a kind of standardised way? \cell\row\trowd\trgaph108\trleft-142\trpaddl108\trpaddr108\trpaddfl3\trpaddfr3 \cellx1895\cellx8979\pard\intbl\sa600\caps liz\cell\caps0 But to be boringly pedantic isn\rquote t it almost being called a clinic so it gets around the laws because to open a brothel in the UK would be illegal. \cell\row\trowd\trgaph108\trleft-142\trpaddl108\trpaddr108\trpaddfl3\trpaddfr3 \cellx1895\cellx8979\pard\intbl\sa600\caps kirsty\cell\caps0 Yeah. \cell\row\trowd\trgaph108\trleft-142\trpaddl108\trpaddr108\trpaddfl3\trpaddfr3 \cellx1895\cellx8979\pard\intbl\sa600\caps liz\cell\caps0 But to open a clinic\'85\cell\row\trowd\trgaph108\trleft-142\trpaddl108\trpaddr108\trpaddfl3\trpaddfr3 \cellx1895\cellx8979\pard\intbl\sa600\caps kirsty\cell\caps0 Potentially that could be a huge part of it. I think Madam Becky herself has said that the services are voluntary. I could be wrong about that. So that\rquote s another way of getting round the potentially illegal situation there. \cell\row\trowd\trgaph108\trleft-142\trpaddl108\trpaddr108\trpaddfl3\trpaddfr3 \cellx1895\cellx8979\pard\intbl\sa600\caps liz\cell\caps0 But it\rquote s very much medicalised?\cell\row\trowd\trgaph108\trleft-142\trpaddl108\trpaddr108\trpaddfl3\trpaddfr3 \cellx1895\cellx8979\pard\intbl\sa600\caps kirsty\cell\caps0 Very much so. Very within kind of a rehabilitative space. And sex work really interests me as a form of sexual access for disabled people. Of the men that I interviewed seven out of 16 of them had been with a sex worker at least once and had paid for sex, so it is a reality of many disabled people\rquote s sexual lives. \cell\row\trowd\trgaph108\trleft-142\trpaddl108\trpaddr108\trpaddfl3\trpaddfr3 \cellx1895\cellx8979\pard\intbl\sa600\caps liz\cell\caps0 I just need to ask you: is that higher than the average for non-disabled men?\cell\row\trowd\trgaph108\trleft-142\trpaddl108\trpaddr108\trpaddfl3\trpaddfr3 \cellx1895\cellx8979\pard\intbl\sa600\caps kirsty\cell\caps0 There are not similar statistics of the non-disabled population. \cell\row\trowd\trgaph108\trleft-142\trpaddl108\trpaddr108\trpaddfl3\trpaddfr3 \cellx1895\cellx8979\pard\intbl\sa600\caps liz\cell\caps0 Rob?\cell\row\trowd\trgaph108\trleft-142\trpaddl108\trpaddr108\trpaddfl3\trpaddfr3 \cellx1895\cellx8979\pard\intbl\sa600\caps rob\cell\caps0 There\rquote s a thesis waiting to be written.\cell\row\trowd\trgaph108\trleft-142\trpaddl108\trpaddr108\trpaddfl3\trpaddfr3 \cellx1895\cellx8979\pard\intbl\sa600\caps liz\cell\caps0 I was just thinking, Damon, Rob I just want to do a little poll now. My particular worry about the kind of conversations and the media portrayal of disability and sex work is whose voices do we leave out when we talk about disability and sex work? And I would argue that we\rquote re not really listening or paying much attention to the desires of disabled women who may want to pay for sex as well or may not. How does the way that we talk about disability and sex work change when we include a diversity of voices? Because at the moment it seems that when we talk about disability and sex work we\rquote re talking about disabled men and actually there could be a lot more equality. \cell\row\trowd\trgaph108\trleft-142\trpaddl108\trpaddr108\trpaddfl3\trpaddfr3 \cellx1895\cellx8979\pard\intbl\sa600\caps rob\cell\caps0 So you think women would pay for sex if they had the opportunity to in this? \cell\row\trowd\trgaph108\trleft-142\trpaddl108\trpaddr108\trpaddfl3\trpaddfr3 \cellx1895\cellx8979\pard\intbl\sa600\caps kirsty\cell\caps0 I think if disabled women\'85if there was more of a market for disabled women to pay for sex maybe more of them would. \cell\row\trowd\trgaph108\trleft-142\trpaddl108\trpaddr108\trpaddfl3\trpaddfr3 \cellx1895\cellx8979\pard\intbl\sa600\caps rob\cell\caps0 Have you had any stories people who have actually told you this, that they would? \cell\row\trowd\trgaph108\trleft-142\trpaddl108\trpaddr108\trpaddfl3\trpaddfr3 \cellx1895\cellx8979\pard\intbl\sa600\caps kirsty\cell\caps0 No. All of the women in my research were kind of quite horrified at my suggestion they might pay for sex. \cell\row\trowd\trgaph108\trleft-142\trpaddl108\trpaddr108\trpaddfl3\trpaddfr3 \cellx1895\cellx8979\pard\intbl\sa600\caps liz\cell\caps0 You were asking the wrong women I think. \cell\row\trowd\trgaph108\trleft-142\trpaddl108\trpaddr108\trpaddfl3\trpaddfr3 \cellx1895\cellx8979\pard\intbl\sa600\caps kirsty\cell\caps0 Maybe I was who knows. So that tells you immediately there\rquote s a marked gender difference in how we talk about paying for sex and things. \cell\row\trowd\trgaph108\trleft-142\trpaddl108\trpaddr108\trpaddfl3\trpaddfr3 \cellx1895\cellx8979\pard\intbl\sa600\caps rob\cell\caps0 Have all these problems created a situation whereby it\rquote s actually affected the sex drive of many people with disabilities? I don\rquote t think the sex work can\rquote t not be intimate like it can be an intimate form of sexuality I would think but I think it\rquote s positioned as an answer to a much bigger social and cultural problem as you touched on earlier on the show than just putting a band aid on the issue and bringing sex workers in. \cell\row\trowd\trgaph108\trleft-142\trpaddl108\trpaddr108\trpaddfl3\trpaddfr3 \cellx1895\cellx8979\pard\intbl\sa600\caps liz\cell\caps0 Kirsty, thank you so much, it\rquote s been fascinating. \cell\row\trowd\trgaph108\trleft-142\trpaddl108\trpaddr108\trpaddfl3\trpaddfr3 \cellx1895\cellx8979\pard\intbl\sa600\caps kirsty\cell\caps0 Thank you. \cell\row\trowd\trgaph108\trleft-142\trpaddl108\trpaddr108\trpaddfl3\trpaddfr3 \cellx1895\cellx8979\pard\intbl\sa600\caps liz\cell\caps0 Thank you for joining us. And I think there\rquote s lots of really great work being done at grass roots level, there\rquote s lots of opportunities for youngsters from six to nine onwards and I think they\rquote re getting really well established. Obviously trying to get more high profile events in the calendar this year so there\rquote s been an announcement that they\rquote ll be more high profile athletics events sort of Grand Prix type events during this year. I think it will start at a lower level, but the idea is obviously for the likes of Jonny Peacock and David Weir there\rquote s going to be more athletics around the world, more competition. Because that is one of the big problems that we know is that in terms of off the back of the Paralympics what\rquote s going on \endash cycling Jody Cundi\rquote s been tweeting a lot, you know he lost it at the Paralympics as we all know, even you probably knew that, Liz, he threw his toys or his leg out of the pram if you remember?\cell\row\trowd\trgaph108\trleft-142\trpaddl108\trpaddr108\trpaddfl3\trpaddfr3 \cellx1895\cellx8979\pard\intbl\sa600\caps liz\cell\caps0 Oh that one, yes. \cell\row\trowd\trgaph108\trleft-142\trpaddl108\trpaddr108\trpaddfl3\trpaddfr3 \cellx1895\cellx8979\pard\intbl\sa600\caps tony\cell\caps0 Leg out the pram, he got upset.
