On the right track!

Trainee railway engineers will be able to get hands-on experience in York from now on. The Yorkshire Railway Academy (YRA) has built a section of track for students to practice signalling, maintenance and emergency situations.

The YRA is a partnership between the National Railway Museum and York College and already trains large numbers of rail staff in its classrooms.

The new track offers a safe and authentic training environment and can simulate real track and signalling operations with access to the main line and rail network.

The YRA says the facility is ideal for many training and demonstration purposes, including incident training, rolling stock, track safety and traction. It has a well-equipped signal box that can accommodate a group of 12 for training and demonstration purposes.

The new track was officially launched by Professor Andrew McNaughton, the Chief Engineer of Network Rail. He commented: "Everything about the railway as a transport system is about skilled people, they build it, they operate it, they maintain it."

"This kind of facility is absolutely fundamental to our future."

The Principal of York College, Dr Alison Birkinshaw, said: "Already we鈥檙e working with a large number of employers, and clearly this is a specialist facility for people working with signalling and track and people will be sent here from across the country."

"It鈥檚 very exciting. It鈥檚 really important to us to make training as real and as useful as we can.鈥
