Crowd at Fibbers, York
Seeing it Wanyu's way!

Review: Grinny Grandad

Fibbers, York, 1 Dec 2006
Hip Hop, electronica and break beat, with a 'moderate' amount of humour thrown in for good measure. "Isn't this what most of us bustling people living in a busy urban jungle desire the most these days?", asks reveiwer Wanyu Lin.

The most wonderful thing about Grinny Grandad is that they always succeed in striking you with nice surprises of what they can do. Looking around the crowd you see the ones engrossed in their music with smiles on their faces, or, even better, grinning with enjoyment.

These are the genres the local York quartet Grinny Grandad categorise their music in on their Myspace web page: Hip Hop, electronica, break beat. In their self-intro they say 'If you're going to listen to these songs, grab a beer, get comfy, sit back and have your sense of humour switched to Moderate'. Oh, isn't this what most of us bustling people living in a busy urban jungle desire the most these days?

"One has to be there sucking it in, sensing it, feeling it to understand the Grinny way"

Opening with the song 'Aktion Pak' was like an excellent announcement, and got everyone jumping up and down! Such energy and shiny elements came from the stage filling up Fibbers' every corner. One has to be there sucking it in, sensing it, feeling it to understand the Grinny way.

The female vocalist Claire Swain brought the climax to the night singing 'Peaches and Cream' (listen to a demo on their sister website www.myspace.com/grinnygrandma). In this we heard the quality of Claire's voice presented very nicely, mixed beautifully with the essential arrangement from Chris Morton, the face hidden behind the magical instruments, his long fringe, and his glasses.

Also half hidden in the darker end of the stage was the guitarist of the band, Gavin. He probably was too modest to attract attention that he thought should be thrown on the other three, but his guitarist's techniques and sensitivity refused his intention for his appearance to be blotted out!听

The set reassuringly impressed both old fans and new friends, and ended with the tune called 'Purple' all by Chris himself, its lingering fading-out was superb and stylish! All in all it was a terrific night of musical fluctuations that touched the audience's inner selves - if they opened themselves up, with a little help from their drinks, in a moderate mood.听
