Punk band on stage
'Computerpunk' band, C64

'Computerpunk' love!

By Wanyu Lin
After being a member of the audience at Fibbers on countless occasions, Wanyu finally gets a taste of what it's like to look back at the crowd from the stage. And what better way to start a career on stage than by dancing for a 'computerpunk' band?!

Last Friday a few girls and I were dancing on stage at Fibbers. We were all dancers for the coolest computer punk band, C64 (check them out on their website: www.myspace.com/c64computerpunk), which consists of York University based musicians.

As someone who is no dancer, I never would have even dreamed about doing some dancing like this for a band. Somehow having lived in York, hanging out with talented musical souls over the past year, courage has been generated in me, and in the middle of busy student researchers' schedules we managed to find a time slot; together we had a terrific night.

"It was such good fun, no one could stop laughing. The party atmosphere could be felt everywhere at Fibbers."

The other three bands were all interesting and inspiring! The Moguls and Dust Bowl Central presented some comparatively 'traditional' vibes for the night, followed by Swound from Nottingham with a set that kept all those down there jumping, shaking their bodies, and enjoying themselves. Better than any alcohol, speaking of the relaxing effect!

And then came C64's big party on the stage! Dance coordinator, Cat, and I were 'violently ill' - suffering from stage fear and the fact that we had to be on stage soon started to get on our nerves. A shot of vodka plus red-bull? Oh, right before we went on there, two more girls, Lucy and Nik from York St John, decided to join us. 2 +2 = 4. Yeah! Solidarity! We were ready to dance like wild beings on Fibbers big stage - Fibbers stage!!! where Graham Coxon, Howling Bells, I Am Jack and Bloc Party played before! How could this be happening, I thought.

It was much more spacious than we thought, and it was not as loud as we imagined it to be. Once I was there, fear suddenly disappeared, and although my dancing (if it could be called dancing at all) was not impressive, I was pretty pleased to receive some polite praises afterward, the fact being that I was genuinely enjoying myself staring back at the audience and the band, rather than being watched as a performer... Roles exchange indeed...

The climax of the gig was when Rowan from Swound dressed up as the cutest bumble bee in the whole world, dancing about on stage. It was such good fun, no one could stop laughing. The party atmosphere could be felt everywhere at Fibbers.

The musicians from C64 were really amazing and what is the best is they were very encouraging too in terms of what they required from us dancers, and I really appreciated their laid-back attitude: they kept saying fun is the whole point of the gig. It's true, otherwise why play music?! Their creativity and enthusiasm certainly show in their music, and that was such a great source for us student researchers to gain positivity from - just try your best, just show what you're good at, just enjoy what you do!

It was also a night of fantastic friendship and a new beginning of my other beautiful dreams.听听听
