Non-freshers' survival

By Wan-yu
Freshers' week can be an unsettling time, when everyone is keen to make a good impression. A an 'old hand' (aka PHD student!) Wan-yu has some advice on how to get it right.

I can hardly believe it's October. It's this time of the year again. Having said all the goodbyes to friends who left uni, and having helped some others to move out of their dorms, we soon should expect loads of new faces to appear on campus. Exciting!

For us non-freshers, the first few weeks might be a little noisy wherever we go, the campus being crowded everywhere. For some of us, the library will be less quiet, (although still quiet enough, I have to say, I think even freshers in our uni study very hard), and there'll be more queues in the market square. Be a little tolerant though, since we all were freshers before! Remember how lost we all got when we first arrived here!!

Don't be shy about going to freshers' fair--try not to pretend to be a fresher though, as that's a bit sad. Avoid it if you want, and if you do go, don't give the freshers wrong impressions of the uni--some of them might still be thinking about dropping out, and you don't want to be the reason why they quit, do you? What heavy responsibility!

OK, and so there seem to be more and more international students. Why not see it as an opportunity to know more about other countries! Especially those who come to the country or this side of the planet for the first time in their lives, why not make the effort and be a little more friendly and open-minded! It doesn't hurt, does it? If you can't be bothered, at least don't scare them away. Mind you, even costcutter on campus has started to include more international ranges of stuff!

What else should we non-freshers keep in mind? Hmm, perhaps it's time we stop feeding the ducks on campus. Let the freshers do it. The worst thing would be to over-feed the birds, especially they were harshly on a diet over the summer. We all remember when we were freshers how fun it was to see all the little pretty animals walking freely here and there on the greens and floating in the water...

Finally, try not to sound old--this is really important! Don't go 'last year I did that...', or 'oh, it was different last year...', or 'my friends last year and I went...' because all these would sound off-putting and it doesn't give the freshers any useful information at all, apart from how boring and/or what a nostalgic state you're in.听

I think that's all I can think of at the moment. Have a fabulous new term everyone!听听听
