The Maestro

I was there in attendance on that wonderful day
How I remember that memorable match so well
A large crowd was at Windsor Park,
Belfast From then this is my story that I am going
to tell.
听
You see I cam from a strong Gaelic background
Gaelic football had to be the game that was played
Playing soccer was out of bounds and banned
From that narrow dictat you daren't have strayed.
听
And even watcing a soccer match as a spectator
Was then also covered by the now infamous ban
Come hell or highwater, I had to see my hero play
For I was George Best's number on estatic fan.
听
Whenever the Scotland and Northern Ireland teams
Took the pitch, they were greeted with a mighty
roar
Both teams had many well known stars in their
midst
But I was really hoping my hero George would score.
听
The referee blew the whistle to get the game sarted
And I was soom roaring along with all the rest
My soccer idol soon had the ball at his skillful
feet
The one and only, that magical lad George Best.
听
He bamboozled and tortured the the Scottish defenders
George turned them inside out with his skill
Every blade of grass of Windsor Park he covered
Not for one moment did our George stand still.
听
The spectators they clapped his delicate touches
For they witnessed something special that day
Our George put on such a virtuoso performance.
This was one of the the greatest games he did
play.
听
All too soon the time was up for this match to
end
For what we seen was a superb one-man show
The wizardy and the skill displayed by George
From the memory bank will never fade or go.
听
I was glad that I had the courage and foresight
To defy what after all was a narow-minded ban
Watching George and all the soccer players
Certainly, didn't make me any less of a Gaelic
fan.
听
I often reminisce about that day at Windsor park
And of that wonderful game for his contry in '67
George has left us with many footbal memories
He will always be listed in the world's best eleven.
听
George has now been laid in his final resting
place
All mankind will one day receive that fianl call
George was human with plenty of human frailities
But he was the maestro when he was on the ball.
