Christmas Sucks
By John McMenamin
Lop-sided trees
And fairy lights
Rows in pubs
Which end in fights.
听
Drunken Santas
Ho-Ho-Ho
Puckered lips
And Mistletoe.
听
Buskers singing
Songs of gladness
Cheap wine helps
To drown the sadness.
听
Big Aggie, bought some festive drawers
With holly around the gusset
They didn鈥檛 have them in snow white
They鈥檙e a funny shade of russet.
听
Naked birds
In cellophane
Plucked and waxed
They look obscene.
听
Wee Andy鈥檚 clinging to the bar
Two candles at his nose
His face is white as virgin snow
Yet his nose, red as the rose?
听
Christmas shopping
Crowded stores
Enter by
The swinging doors.
听
Angry faces
Children huffin鈥
鈥淢aggie, don鈥檛 forget
The stuffing.鈥
Children crying with exhaustion
Screaming like banshees
Clinging like a limpet
To Mummy鈥檚 tired knees.
After shave
For Uncle Harry
A pair of socks
For cousin Larry.
Would your Mother wear this hat?
Where the hell鈥檚 wee Jimmy at?
Why did we leave it oh so late?
I don鈥檛 feel love, I鈥檓 full of hate.
Red faced man
Buys saucy knickers
Children fight
Spouses bickers.
Christmas Eve
Let鈥檚 all be merry
I鈥檒l have a brandy
To hell with sherry.
