WINTER
By JP McMenamin

Winter's on it's way again
The night is full of stars
Jack Frost's nipping at the toes
Time for the red flannel drawers
听
The days are getting shorter
Teh nights are creeping in
ice forms on the cattle trough
Brittle clear and thin.
听
Steam rises up like incense
From midden down the lane
The frost, paints icy flowers
On the window pane
听
he robin's getting bolder
With breast of scarlet red
He cocks his little beady eye
While eating crumbs of bread
听
The honking of the wild geese
As they fly low oer' the lea
Seagulls, seeking shelter
From the wild and stormy sea
听
The lean, red fox is on the prowl
The rabbits unaware
A shrill scream breaks the silence
n the still and frosty air
听
Cawing crows, fly slowly home
As the sun sets in the west
They nestle on the stark, bare trees
The remains of last years nest
听
The holy bush is burdened down
With berries bright and red
Hawthorns silhouette the sky
The branches bare and dead
听
Lights appear in windows
As darkness stalks the earth
People gather round the fire
With their feet close to the hearth
听
A collie dog, barks far away
The North star twinkles low
The wind is blowing from the East
A harbinger of snow
听
The grass is dry and brittle
Icicles ahnging from the eves
Frost glistens underneath the trees
On a mat of dead, dry leaves
听
Shooting stars fall from the sky
Then disappear from view
There's a halo round the yellow moon
Misty, violet blue
听
The whole world seems to be asleep
All is silent, not a sound
Snow falls gently from teh sky
And covers up the ground
听
Winter's on its way again
The night sky's full of stars
Jack Frost's nipping at the toes
Time fr the red flannel drawers
