A "CONSPIRACY OF SILENCE"
On 19 April 1969, members of the RUC entered the home of Sammy Devenny, chasing after a group of young people, and attacked him and other members of his family. Some three months later, Sammy Devenny died. An inquest at the time blamed natural causes for his death, but his family have always believed that the attack was to blame. The Chief Constable, in a statement spoke of "a conspiracy of silence motivated by a misconceived and improper sense of loyalty to their guilty comrades." But no-one was ever held to account. Mark Patterson spoke to three people who were there on that day in 1969: Sammy's son, Jim, and daughter, Ann, as well as the doctor who went to his house, Raymond McClean.
