Six teenagers to watch out for at the Olympics

  • Published

Many teenagers will be thinking about finishing school, passing exams or what games to play in their free time.

But these guys have other plans this summer.

There will be more than 10,000 athletes competing at the Olympic Games when they start on 26 July, but a special few are still teenagers.

Here's Newsround's guide to the best young athletes in Paris 2024.

He may be still in high school but 16-year-old Quincy Wilson from Maryland in the United States will be part of the US athletics squad in Paris.

Quincy says he's had messages of congratulations from some of his idols, including rapper Snoop Dogg and NFL legend Ray Lewis.

The 400m runner will become the youngest American male track star in history and will be part of the pool of sprinters the team bosses will have to choose from to take part in the relay races.

There will be both women鈥檚 and men鈥檚 4 x 400m relay races, as well as a combined event where two men and two women make up each team.

Okay, so not technically a teenager but luckily for 11-year-old Haohao Zheng, there is no lower age limit to compete in the Olympic Games.

The skateboarding sensation from the Guangdong province in southern China began skating at the age of seven, and just four years later she will be going head to head with the best in the world in Paris.

鈥淚 want to tell the world that, even though I am young, I can skate well. I want to fulfil the dreams many adults have,鈥 she said on Chinese social media platform Weibo.

At the age of five, Hezly went to a friend's gymnastics birthday party and immediately discovered a love for the sport.

She is now one of the five USA gymnasts who will be hot favourites to take the gold in the team competition alongside megastar team-mate Simone Biles.

Hezly had planned to learn how to drive this summer, but it looks like competing on the biggest sporting stage of them all will have to do.

Sixteen-year-old Dominika Banevic, also known as BGirl Nicka, earned her spot in Paris by winning the gold medal at the World Breaking Championship in Belgium in 2023.

She was competing against people twice her age and with decades more experience than her.

Nicka will be one of the big contenders to take the first ever Olympic breaking gold medals when the sport begins, and enjoys ice baths to help her recover from tough dancing sessions.

Competing in a home Olympics before the age of 18 will be a moment to remember for Baptiste Addis.

He first picked up a bow at the age of five and says being at the Olympics this year will give him the experience he needs to go for the medals in Los Angeles in 2028.

He was a key part of the team that won the European Outdoor championships earlier this year, so why not take his shot at the gold with the home crowd behind him?

At the age of 17, Summer McIntosh is already a huge star in the swimming world, with four world championship golds to her name.

Not only that, but she holds the world record for the women's long course, 400m individual medley where athletes swim every stroke - freestyle (or front crawl), backstroke, butterfly and breaststroke.

At Paris 2024, she's already won gold in the 400m individual medley and the 400m freestyle.

And she's still got more races to go!
