Euro 2024: Scotland beaten by Germany in tournament opener

Scotland fans were full of hope at the opening match of Euro 2024 on Friday evening.

Scotland took on Germany at the Allianz Arena in Munich in front of thousands of fans.

However, disappointment quickly set in for the Tartan Army and the night ended with a 5-1 defeat for Scotland.

Germany dominated the game from the start, with Florian Wirtz scoring in the first 10 minutes of the match.

The Euro 2024 hosts quickly extended their lead, with Jamal Musiala's goal less than 10 minutes later.

Goal three also came in the first half from a Kai Havertz penalty.

The penalty was awarded after Scotland's Porteous was sent off the pitch just before half-time for a bad tackle, bringing his side down to just 10 men.

Niclas Fullkrug鈥檚 powerful strike brought the score up to 4-0 for Germany in the 67th minute.

20 minutes later, Scotland鈥檚 Scott McKenna鈥檚 free kick bounced off the head of Germany鈥檚 Antonio Rudiger and into the net for an own goal, leading to celebrations from Scotland fans.

However, their side鈥檚 fate was sealed in the end, with one final goal from Germany鈥檚 Emre Can in the 92nd minute.

Germany鈥檚 5-1 result against Scotland is the biggest win by a host nation in their opening match at a European Championship tournament.

It鈥檚 also Germany鈥檚 biggest victory ever at the Euros.

Scotland will face Switzerland in their next game on Wednesday in Cologne.

Meanwhile, Germany will take on Hungary on the same day in Stuttgart.
