Baby Yoda is probably the cutest thing EVER to happen to Star Wars and now he's getting his own movie.

He'll be heading to the big screen in a film that will continue the adventures seen in the Mandalorian streaming series.

A new Star Wars movie called The Mandalorian and Grogu will start being made later this year.

The movie will be directed by Jon Favreau, creator of the Mandalorian TV show, and director of other films such as the Lion King, and the Christmas classic, Elf.

"I have loved telling stories set in the rich world that George Lucas created," said Favreau.

"Bringing the Mandalorian and his apprentice Grogu to the big screen is extremely exciting."

The Mandalorian first came out in 2019, with series one set five years after the events of Return of the Jedi, the sixth chapter in the Star Wars saga of films.

It's also 25 years before the events of Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens - the first of the sequel trilogy of movies.

The Disney+ series fills in some of gaps between the two sets of films and tells the story of a helmeted bounty hunter named Din Djarin who belongs to the warrior race known as Mandalorians.

During his travels, Din meets Grogu - who is the same species as iconic Star Wars character Yoda.

Discovering that the remains of the evil Galactic Empire want to kidnap Grogu, Din Djarin decides to protect him.

The Mandalorian is one of several Star Wars projects in development

The Mandalorian and Grogu is one of several Star Wars films that have been announced as being in development including, a movie starring Daisy Ridley that focusses on her character of Rey, set after Episode IX: The Rise of Skywalker, as well as Mandalorian co-creator Dave Filoni's Heir to the Empire film.

Heir to the Empire will mark the final chapter of the stories seen in the Mandalorian, Book of Boba Fett and Ahsoka TV shows - which run separately to the main saga of Star Wars films and have since been dubbed as the 'Mando-verse'.

Lucasfilm has also announced plans for a second TV series of Ahsoka.
