The organisers of the Olympics have recommended five new sports to be part of the Games.

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has approved the inclusion of cricket, squash, lacrosse, baseball and flag football - a non-contact version of American football.

A vote on the proposals will take place on Monday 16 October.

If, as expected, it passes, the sports would feature at the 2028 Olympic Games in the American city of Los Angeles.

Host cities are able to propose sports they would like added to the Olympic programme, when they stage the event.

The International Olympic Committee confirmed on Friday that it had approved cricket, flag football, lacrosse, squash and softball to be included at the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics.

IOC president Thomas Bach said the new sports allow the Olympic movement to "engage with new athletes and fan communities".

If the sports are approved next week, it would be an especially huge moment for squash - which unlike the other new additions - has never featured in any Olympics before.

Cricket has only once previous appeared at the Olympics - at the Paris games back in 1900, when Great Britain beat France in the final.

This time there is expected to be both a T20 men's and women's tournament at the LA Games.
