Great Britain has its first medal of the Beijing Winter Olympics after the men's curling team made it through to the final.

The four-man squad defeated the United States 8-4 in a tough semi-final to guarantee at least a silver medal.

The team - made up of Bruce Mouat, Grant Hardie, Bobby Lammie and Hammy McMillan - will now play Sweden for gold at 6.05am on Saturday.

It finally ends fears that the British team might finish a Winter Olympics without a medal for the first time since 1992.

Great Britain's women's curlers will have the chance to match the men's achievement as they made it through to the semi-final.

Eve Muirhead, Vicky Wright, Jen Dodds and Hailey Duff defeated the Russian Olympic Committee 9-4.

They play Sweden in the last four at 12:05am on Friday.

Away from curling, hopes of a medal for Team GB were dashed as Zoe Atkin,19, finished ninth in the women's freeski half-pipe final.

Atkin fell on two of her three runs, scoring 73.25 in her final run. It was China's Eileen Gu who took gold, becoming the first freestyle skier to win Olympic medals in three different events.
