Dog mess can be a right nuisance but one part of east London has found a new way to fight the problem...

Barking and Dagenham council is going to take samples of dog poo that's not been cleared up, and trace it back to the dogs that caused them.

They'll use a database where local dog owners have registered DNA information about their pet.

If DNA information from the poo matches up to one of those dogs, the owner will get a warning.

The trial will last for three months to start off with and is said to be the first of its type in the country.

But not all dogs are on the DNA database - at the moment it's not compulsory for an owner to register their dog.

The council say they'll keep an eye the scale of the dog poo problem during the trial and whether people who don't register their pets are responsible for the majority of it.
