The hundreds of volunteers at the Commonwealth Youth Games 2011 have been given royal praise for their "tireless and smiling" contribution.

The Earl of Wessex paid tribute to the 600-strong team in his speech at the opening ceremony in the Isle of Man.

Organisers said the volunteers, who have been nicknamed the Orange Army, have helped make the Games a success.

They have filled positions such as team liaison workers, media relations staff, medal carriers and ball boys and girls.

Chairman of the organising committee Geoff Karran said: "I'm so proud of the people of the IOM who've rallied round so magnificently.

"We set out to create a friendly atmosphere and the Orange Army has certainly delivered that."

Volunteer recruitment started in the Isle of Man over 18 months ago.
