Many Cambodian newspapers and private broadcasters depend on support from political parties. Prime Minister Hun Sen and his allies control several outlets.

There was a significant and severe government crackdown on independent news reporting ahead of the 2018 elections. Reporters Without Borders (RSF) says that "since then, the few attempts to bring independent journalism back to life have drawn the wrath of ruling circles".

RSF says Cambodians now only have access to news provided by major media groups directly linked to Hun Sen.

³ÉÈË¿ìÊÖ World Service broadcasts on 100 FM in Phnom Penh. Radio France Internationale is also available on FM.

Despite government action to monitor and block content, the internet is a preferred news source for many Cambodians and social media is an important platform for activism, says US NGO Freedom House.

There were 13.8 million internet users by July 2022, comprising 81% of the population (Internetworldstats.com).
