Beaumaris pier's 拢2m facelift begins

The condition of the pier at Beaumaris has been deteriorating
Work has begun in Anglesey on a 拢2m project to redevelop and refurbish Beaumaris Pier.
Anglesey council sees the work as a way to secure the long-term future of the pier after recent deterioration.
The finished pier will be double its current width, and all the current timber supports and decking will be strengthened or replaced.
The pier scheme is part of a 拢5.6m project to improve facilities along the Anglesey coast line.
Economic development and tourism portfolio holder councillor Bob Parry said the condition of the pier had deteriorated.
"This major investment is needed to safeguard its long term future and viability," he said.
'Challenging and technical'
"The improvements to the pier will ensure it meets current design and safety standards whilst providing improved accessibility for local businesses and enhance recreational opportunities for the local community and visitors," he added.
Work on the pier will have to be carried out over the summer months because of the "challenging and technical nature of the redevelopment works".
A walkway will be maintained from the stone kiosk to the steps at the end of the pier to allow for access.
The Anglesey county councillor for the town, RL Owen, said it was an exciting project for Beaumaris.
"The refurbishments will take time and every effort will be made to minimise any disruption," he said.
"I have also been given assurances that the works will not affect this year's regattas in any way," he added.
Information about the scheme will be available for the public to see at the pier on Wednesday, 16 March from 1300-1500 GMT.
