Up to 150 jobs could be created at a former cheese-packing plant in Wrexham if plans to turn it into a poultry processing factory get the go ahead.

The Maelor Creamery in Marchwiel closed in March after First Milk lost a large contract with a supermarket chain.

Salisbury Poultry, in Bilston, West Midlands, has submitted its proposals to Wrexham council for approval.

Clwyd South MP Susan Elan Jones said the plans were welcome news given the previous job losses.

The firm's planning application said the site could be operational by the end of 2015, subject to planning approval.

A Salisbury spokesperson said: "We have been seeking a suitable site for this facility and are excited at the prospect of the former Maelor Creamery which has had a long history of highly productive food processing."

Ms Jones said: "I hope that when the full details come through, many of the new jobs on offer will be skilled, stable jobs that build up a prosperous economy and encourage local people to stay in our area."
