Jade Jones: Thousands turn out for Olympic gold medallist

  • Published

Thousands turned out to celebrate Olympic gold medallist Jade Jones in her home town of Flint.

The 19-year-old taekwando fighter was the youngest member of Team GB to win gold at London 2012.

Flint held a civic reception for the medallist followed by an open top bus parade on Saturday, which organisers said drew thousands to the streets.

Town mayor Vicky Perfect said: "People said the town did her proud, but I say she did us proud."

Ms Perfect described the event as "absolutely fantastic".

"When we got down to the castle it was raining but it didn't dampen anyone's spirits.

"There were several thousand people in the castle and and at the streets when she did a balcony bow.

"She must have spent 90 minutes signing autographs."

Model post box

As with all of Team GB's gold medallists, a post box in Flint has been painted gold to mark the success.

Another party was held for Jones at a local sports and social club on Sunday, and Ms Perfect said one little boy there had made a model gold post box for the athlete as a gift.

There are also plans for a Flintshire county celebration according to Ms Perfect.

"I think she's going on holiday tomorrow. I think she probably needs it."

The town's leisure centre will be named after Jones in recognition of her win.
