A former Welsh rugby international has admitted drink-driving after he crashed into the back of a tractor.

Ex-Scarlets and Llanelli player Dafydd Jones was more than twice over the legal limit after crashing on the A40 between St Clears and Carmarthen.

Jones told police he had been drinking beer before the crash at about 18:30 GMT on 11 January.

He was banned from driving for 18 months at Llanelli Magistrates' Court on Tuesday.

The 44-year-old, from Porthyrhyd in Carmarthenshire, told the court he had made "an error of judgement", and had not consumed any food before getting behind the wheel.

His vehicle was said to have collided into the back of a tractor and trailer which had "no illumination".

He was found with 71mg of alcohol per 100 millilitres of breath - with the limit being 35mg.

After pleading guilty to driving under the influence of alcohol, he was ordered to pay a total of 拢1,054 including a fine and court costs in addition to being handed the 18-month driving ban.

If he completes a drink-drive awareness course before next January, his ban will be reduced.
