A police officer has been charged with assaulting a man he arrested.

North Wales Police officer Richard Williams is accused of assaulting a man in Porthmadog, Gwynedd, on 10 May.

PC Williams, 42, will appear at Caernarfon Magistrates' Court on 4 January charged with assault, non-fatal strangulation and actual bodily harm.

The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) carried out an investigation after the matter was referred to it by North Wales Police.

In a statement, the IOPC said: "At the end of our investigation in November, we sent a file of evidence to the Crown Prosecution Service, which has since authorised the charges against the officer."

PC Williams has been suspended by North Wales Police.
